Leadership
Over a cup of coffee on an August afternoon in 2022, two friends of twenty years continued their years-long discussion of their passion for entrepreneurship and the value of great relationships. The topic that day was the present commercial real estate brokerage business model. All of the large brokerage firms seemed to be doing the same things the same ways over and over again. It was like Covid never happened and it was hard to tell them all apart.
The large brokerage firm incentive structure was outdated, too. They simply rewarded brokers who produced the largest commissions. They did not reward brokers for client satisfaction. They did not reward brokers for the ethical or generous treatment of their own colleagues. They did not track or measure the quality of their own employees’ experience. The universal strategy for brokers who want to get to the top is ‘make a lot of money by any means necessary year after year and the company will let you do whatever you want.’
But if someone did start a company from the ground up, what would they choose to reward? Could a company exist that puts people over profit, puts positive client outcomes over egos and delivers unwavering advocacy for its people? Can it be a commercial real estate brokerage firm? This became the hypothesis for Singer Damareck Real Estate.
